Geography
We provide a high quality geography curriculum through a topic-based approach and through our three golden strands: location, diversity and relationships. These threads are revisited within and across the year groups (EYFS – Year 6) to help children build on their existing knowledge.
Golden Thread 1 – Location
- To locate continents, oceans, regions, countries and cities.
- To use, draw and interpret a variety of maps.
- To identify position (compass directions, latitudes, longitude, Equator, Northern Hemisphere, Southern Hemisphere, the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn, Arctic and Antarctic circle, the Prime/Greenwich Meridian and time zones)
- Weather/Climate
Golden Thread 2 – Diversity
- To understand the geographical similarities and differences through the study of human and physical geography of their own area and others around the world.
- How people and places are different and diverse, even across one country or continent.
Golden Thread 3 – Relationships
- How physical features impact the lives of people (e.g. settlement and factors that influence it).
- How people impact the physical geography around them through identifying the cause, impact and response (e.g. building a motorway).
As pupils progress through the school, we aim to provide practical and interactive activities to deepening and secure their understanding. Allowing the children opportunities to develop specific skills such as fieldwork, map work and interpreting photos and data.
