Early Years Foundation Stage

In Oak Unit, our curriculum and continuous provision is underpinned by an effective balance of adult- initiated and child-led learning. Our curriculum is designed with the starting points of our pupils and the Early Learning goals in mind.  This is carefully planned to ensure that children’s skills and knowledge progress throughout their Early Years journey. Our continuous Early Excellence provision has been carefully chosen to provide open-ended resources to create an inclusive curriculum to encourage our children to become independent learners, following their own lines of enquiry. Parents are encouraged to be actively involved in their child’s school life through attending Storytime sessions, Parent workshops and contribute to their children's Tapestry learning journeys.

Autumn Term

In the Autumn term, we will be getting to know the children and finding out about their families. Looking at how we are all different and unique, including our families.

We will also be looking at changes in Autumn, Bonfire Night and Christmas. We will start dough disco and squiggle while you wiggle to support fine and gross motor muscle development to help children develop their pencil grip, which in turn will help them with their letter formation and writing.

As soon as the children are settled into school life, we start our Read Write Inc Phonics program initially learning our first set of sounds before using these sounds to blend to read words. As part of our Literacy, we will start our Drawing Club work, where the children will continue to develop a love of reading and writing though sharing of quality stories and video stimuli.

In Maths, we will be starting by focusing on numbers 1-5 looking at composition, number recognition and number formation as well as recognising 2d shapes and ordering objects by size.

Spring Term

In Spring, we will look at seasonal changes as well as Chinese New Year, Shrove Tuesday, Easter and World Book Day. We will continue our Drawing club work, developing our writing and beginning to write captions for our work. We will continue to develop our handwriting through Squiggle me into a writer. In Maths, we will be focusing on composition, recognition and formation of numbers 6-10 as well as mass, capacity and 3d shapes.

Summer Term

During the Summer term, we will continue to look at how our outdoor environment is changing as we move from Spring into Summer. Focussing on what plants and animals need to live and grow.  We will continue with Drawing club and become more independent in our writing, writing sentences and using some ‘red words’ in our writing. In Maths, we will look at numbers to 20 and beyond as well as sharing, grouping and patterns. During this term we also start to introduce some routines ready for our transition to Year 1.
