Science Statement of Intent
At Barton St Peter’s CE Primary School it is our intent in Science first and for-most to encourage enthusiasm for the subject. We believe Science is best taught through a practical ‘hands- on’ approach wherever possible. We want our children to explore and question natural phenomena and the world around them. It is important that the gain age appropriate knowledge of the disciplines of Chemistry, Physics and Biology. Science is a hugely important element of the curriculum and, as such, our science curriculum is planned carefully to ensure progression through the school. We include high levels of practical lessons to develop scientific skills. We link our teaching Science to our termly Topics if at all possible, so that learning is connected for our children, however some knowledge has to be taught discreetly. We seek to use our own school environment to engage them in learning about the living world. During their time with us, we ensure they visit our local wildlife centres at ‘Waters Edge’ and along the Humber Bank to explore different habitats and the variety of life. We inspire the children through enrichment events and school visits so they connect science to the real world and local places of work.
At St Peter’s we place high importance on working scientifically. We ensure our curriculum offers opportunities to make observations, pattern seek, identify, classify and group, make comparisons and test fairly and use secondary sources to research,
By the time our children leave us, they should be able to ask questions, think critically, investigate confidently and use appropriate scientific vocabulary. They should be able to link their scientific learning to the real world and see the relevance of the Science to their own future and the future of the world in which they live.
