Early Years Foundation Stage

In Oak Unit, our curriculum and continuous provision is underpinned by an effective balance of adult- initiated and child led learning. Our “I can” Curriculum is designed with the starting points of our pupils and the Early Learning goals in mind. It is carefully constructed and sequenced to ensure that children’s skills and knowledge progress throughout their Early Years journey, following the EYFS I can statements. Our continuous Early Ecellence provision has been carefully chosen to provide open ended resources to create an inclusive curriculum to encourage our children to become independent learners, following their own lines of enquiry. We use a talking tub and floorbook approach to decide enhancements based on our children’s interests and to determine the book and vocabulary of the week. Parents are encouraged and welcomed to be actively involved in their child’s school life through attending parent reading sessions, topic activity sessions, trips and contributing directly to their child’ learning journey through Tapestry.

Autumn Term

In the Autumn term, we will be getting to know our children and finding out about each child and their families. We will also be looking at changes in Autumn, Harvest, Diwali, Bonfire Night and Christmas. We will introduce dough disco and squiggle while you wiggle to support fine motor muscle development to help children develop their pencil grip, which in turn will help them with their writing skills. We will start our Read Write Inc Phonics program and learn to blend sounds to make words. We will be practising writing our names and beginning to write CVC words, such as cat, dog, hen.  We will begin to read ‘red words’ from the Read Write Inc. Phonics program. In Maths we will be starting our White Rose Maths scheme focusing on numbers 1-10 looking at composition, number recognition and number formation as well as recognising 2d shapes and ordering objects by size.

Spring Term

In Spring we will look at changes in Winter and Spring. We will continue to follow our I can curriculum based on the I can statements inspired by the children’s interests reflected in their floorbook and continue to develop their knowledge and vocabulary through a book of the week. We will continue to use a combination of child and adult initiated activities.  We will focus on Chinese New Year, Shrove Tuesday, Easter and World Book Day. We will also introduce Drawing club. We will continue to develop our letter formation and begin to write captions and learn more ‘red words’. In Maths we will be focusing on one more and one less, addition and subtraction, 3d shapes, weight and numbers 1-20.

Summer Term

During the Summer term we will look at changes from Spring to Summer. We will continue to follow our I can curriculum based on the I can statements inspired by the children’s interests and continue to develop their knowledge and vocabulary through their interests inspired by the floorbook and talking tubs.  We will focus on Chinese New Year, Shrove Tuesday, Easter and World Book Day. We will continue with drawing club and become more independent in our writing, writing sentences and using some ‘red words’ in our writing. In Maths we will be focusing on addition and subtraction, doubling and halving and numbers to 20 and beyond. During this term we also start to introduce some routines ready for our transition to Year 1.
